In addition to cozy amenities and modern technology to ease your anxiety, we have sedation available. You can choose from:
- Laughing Gas (Nitrous Oxide) – This gentle sedative has been used for centuries. It will give you a gentle sense of calm and take the edge off your anxiety. The results fade as soon as your appointment is over, so you have no lingering effects.
- Oral Sedation – If you have more severe anxiety, we can give you a prescription for an oral sedative. You’ll take the small pill before you arrive, so you are in a relaxed state of mind for your appointment. You’ll remain groggy for several hours, so you will need a ride home.
- IV Sedation – For patients with significant dental anxiety or those undergoing more complex procedures, IV sedation offers a deeper level of relaxation. The medication is administered through a small IV, allowing us to precisely monitor and adjust your level of sedation throughout your treatment. While you'll remain able to respond to instructions, most patients remember very little of the procedure. Because the effects take time to wear off, you'll need a responsible adult to drive you home after your appointment.

Commonly Asked Questions About Sedation Options
At our practice, we have three types of sedation available: laughing gas, oral sedation, and IV sedation
- Laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, is a safe and mild sedative inhaled through a mask placed over the nose.
- Oral sedation involves taking a pill before the procedure to help you relax.
- IV sedation is administered through a small IV and provides a deeper level of relaxation while allowing us to carefully monitor and adjust your comfort throughout treatment. If you choose oral sedation or IV sedation, you will need a ride home.
The duration of the sedative effects depends on the type of sedation used. Laughing gas typically wears off within a few minutes. Oral sedation and IV sedation can take several hours to wear off. You should arrange for a ride home after your appointment if you receive oral sedation or IV sedation, as you will not be able to drive.
It is generally recommended to avoid eating or drinking for a certain period before sedation. Dr. Crawford will provide specific instructions based on the type of sedation used and the time of your appointment. It is important to follow these instructions to ensure the sedation is safe and effective.
